At METRICA, we continue to promote initiatives that strengthen our commitment to sustainability and social responsibility. As part of CARE MONTH—our corporate month dedicated to social action, sustainability, and healthy living—we hosted a global webinar titled “Reduce Your Personal Ecological Footprint,” led by Fundación Vida Sostenible.
As recently shared on our social media channels, the session brought together 57 participants from our 5 international offices, reflecting a shared interest across our global team in better understanding the environmental impact of our daily habits and decisions.
What is an ecological footprint?
During the webinar, we explored this essential sustainability indicator in depth. The ecological footprint measures the amount of natural resources we consume based on our lifestyle and compares it to the Earth’s ability to regenerate them. The result is expressed in the number of planets required to sustain that level of consumption.
Today, the global average stands at 1.75 planets, while Spain’s figure reaches 2.5 planets, highlighting a level of consumption that far exceeds the planet’s regenerative capacity.
Earth Overshoot Day: a global warning sign
Another key concept covered in the session was Earth Overshoot Day, the date on which humanity consumes all the natural resources the planet can regenerate in a full year.
-
In the European Union, this point was reached on May 5.
-
In Spain, on May 23.
-
Globally, on July 24.
After these dates, we continue to consume “on ecological credit,” depleting future resources and compromising the planet’s long-term stability.
Practical measures to reduce our ecological footprint
The webinar offered clear, actionable strategies to help us adopt more sustainable lifestyles. These actions fall into six essential areas:
-
Energy: improving efficiency, reducing unnecessary consumption, and supporting clean energy sources.
-
Water: adopting conscious and efficient water-use habits.
-
Mobility: prioritizing sustainable options such as walking, cycling, or public transportation.
-
Materials and waste: reusing, repairing, and recycling properly.
-
Food: choosing local, fresh products and minimizing food waste.
-
Nature and biodiversity: protecting ecosystems and promoting the regeneration of green spaces.
A step forward in our sustainability commitment
This webinar served as a valuable opportunity to raise awareness, share reflections, and encourage meaningful change. At METRICA, we are committed to building a more responsible and sustainable future, where every person plays an active role.
